This book is Based on carefully researched interwoven factors which brings out the plight of the elderly women in Uganda who are not able to provide for their basic social needs but are left to fend for themselves, yet in most cases are widowed and looking after orphans. This population who are growing both in number and proportion do not have any social insurance from government but have to depend on their older children. This is not possible because of increased morbidity and mortality of prime-aged adults caused by HIV/AIDS. The shift from the traditional extended family structure that for long over decades has been the safety nets for the elderly which is slowly giving way to the nuclear structure, has had wide ranging socio-economic impacts on both urban and rural elderly irrespective of gender. The elderly are forced to adopt some livelihood coping strategies such as casual laboring such as fetching water, crushing stones, hand craft making, gardening, baby sitting among others rewarded with little cash or food. However, this is challenging because of their limited physical energy and visual impairments.
In this book, the author examines how the Catholic Church who has always been the protagonist of civilization and development, has influenced marketing of agro-products especially in the rural Uganda. The Catholic Church in Uganda has been found very vibrant in the education sector, in the health sectors, currently we see it in the banking sector as well as in the insurance sector. Can the same Church be located in the marketing sector? The author points out the importance of the Uganda's Catholic Church to be even more involved in the marketing of agro-products since over 70% of this population are farmers. The Catholic Church leaders need to know how the money that the Christians bring to Church, or to schools to pay tuition, or to the health centers for medication is made. What do the members grow? Where and how are the products sold. Knowledge of this information would very much help the Church leaders to respond to the marketing sector just as they respond to the other sectors like health and education. For without straightening the marketing sector, a rural Christian who is a farmer may fail to benefit from other services that the Catholic Church promotes.
The study sought to investigate factors that lead farmers to buy or not to buy crop insurance in Muhanga town council in Kabale District. In this dissertation, the researcher outlines summary of findings based on objectives of the study. Descriptive statistics of data were computed before correlation analysis and Probit regression. It can be recommended that more advertisements should be done not only in Muhanga town council but also in other areas where farming is the main economic activity. This will promote and lead to an increase the number of farmers buying crop insurance since they were found to have a positive coefficient. Then males should also be encouraged to engage themselves in agriculture farming so as to boost the demand for crop insurance. Premium is one of the main reasons that can engage farmers to buying crop insurance. This is because when the premiums are high, they discourage farmers may be because they are investing their income in other investments or cannot afford to pay the high premiums which reduces their demand and need for farmers to buy crop insurance.
