Annie Monahan was arguably the most successful ´´black widow´´ of the early twentieth century, when you factor in the time it took for authorities to finally catch up with her. She had killed three husbands and her own niece, garnering sizable payouts from life insurance companies as she acted as a beneficiary in all of the cases. She performed these acts of murder in the sleepy town of New Haven, Connecticut, dealing with police who always seem to be one step behind her. Monahan grew bolder with each murder, increasing payout amounts in each case and even marrying the younger brother of a man she had killed. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Sangita Chauhan. On a freezing Christmas morning, a distraught young man named Jeremy Davies led police to a corpse he had placed in a snowbank some hours before. They found a man´s body, naked, bloody and beaten. Davies insisted that he had not killed the man but that he and his fiancée had simply buried a stranger´s body. The police investigation confirmed the fact that the victim, Harry Berge, had died in the apartment of Barbara Hoffman. Hoffman had dropped out of university a few credits short of a degree and had worked in a local massage parlor for some time. She and Davies had recently become engaged. After the police discovered that Berge was an ex-lover of Hoffman´s and that he had signed over his house and an insurance policy to her benefit and, further, that Davies had also made her the beneficiary of his insurance policies, they began to suspect that Davies might be in danger. They kept him under watch for a while but eventually had to stop the surveillance. Shortly thereafter, Davies turned up dead, an apparent suicide. However, it was discovered that he had died from cyanide poisoning and, though he had also been beaten, so had Berge. Although Hoffman was never charged for Davies´ murder, she was charged and convicted for Berge´s murder. The suspicion was that her intended victim had been Davies and that Berge´s death was unplanned. Hofmann was convicted for the murder and went to prison with a life sentence. 1. Language: English. At 63, former jazz musician Wade Lovett finds himself something of a trailer park Lothario carrying on affairs with three different women. But when circumstances prompt Carol Smitzky to make a compelling case for a marriage arrangement, he agrees. The next morning, he visits girlfriend number two, Peggy MacCallister, to tell her the news - and finds her lying dead on her kitchen floor. Shortly after Peggy´s death, Wade is surprised to learn that she left him guardianship of her prized cat, Prince Albert. Even more surprising, she named Wade as beneficiary of her life insurance, which provokes her son to demand an autopsy. As a natural death seems less and less likely, Wade becomes the prime suspect in her murder, forcing him to investigate the crime himself. Was Peggy killed by one of her two children, the park manager, a mystery second boyfriend, or was it Wade´s third paramour, Sue Mullins? 1. Language: English. Narrator: Peter Husmann. Stella Nickell´s small-time world was one of big-time dreams. In 1986, her biggest one came true when her husband died during a seizure, making her the beneficiary of a $175,000-plus insurance payoff - until authorities discovered that Bruce Nickell´s headache capsules had been laced with cyanide. In an attempt to cover her tracks, Stella did the unconscionable. She saw to it that a stranger would also become a ´random casualty´ of cyanide-tainted painkillers. But Stella´s cunning plan came undone when her daughter Cynthia notified federal agents. And troubling questions lingered like the secret of bitter almonds... What would turn a gregarious barfly like Stella into a cold-hearted killer overnight? Why would Cynthia, a mirror image of her mother, turn on her own flesh and blood? Did Cynthia reveal everything she knew about the crimes? The stunning answers would unfold in a case that sparked a national uproar, dug deep into a troubled family history, and exposed an American mother for the pretty poison she was. 1.
