Doctors Michael Winniford and Peter Ubel discuss the current state of prescription drugs on this edition of Fresh Air. Dr. Winniford is a cardiologist, professor of medicine at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, and director of the university's heart care center. Dr. Ubel is assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, and is also on the faculty of the university's center for bioethics. The two doctors talk about the high cost of prescription drugs and the problems associated with that cost. Gross domestic product. Health insurance. Soaring energy prices. Major economic issues dominate today's news, but how do these issues impact the average citizen? This primer in 21st-century economics for the non-economist surveys today's most urgent economic issues that affect both global events and our everyday lives. You'll learn what economics has to say about making the decisions - big or small - that affect our daily lives: What factors come into play when you're deciding whether to buy this car or that one, or even commute by bus? Mow the lawn or take a nap? Grill a burger with a bubbling slice of cheese or eat a simple salad? And you'll see how this same kind of analysis applies to the major issues of public policy, where the needs and wants of a nation and its people - whether financial security, safety from terrorism, or even an available kidney for someone desperately waiting on a transplant list - involve tradeoffs, which are sometimes obvious and sometimes not. Whether dealing with the traditional sorts of topics most of us are used to seeing in an economics course - Social Security, inflation, unemployment, immigration, taxation, and the like - or issues perhaps surprising, such as gambling, major sports franchises, and even overeating, these 36 lectures offer a steady flow of insights about public policy and the American economy. By showing the full range of economic factors at work, this course can help you become an even more insightful judge of policy recommendations and of the leaders and policy makers who advocate them. And you may well learn to supplement your own analyses as you make the real-life economic choices each of us faces every day, becoming an even wiser consumer and manager of your own economic future. Effect of Listing Government Owned Enterprises ...

Before reforms in the state owned enterprises, known as Parastatal, the Parastatal sector in Kenya covered over 150 enterprises involving a diverse range of activities from trade and commerce, a field-production and processing, manufacturing, insurance and utility services etc. Over 90% were commercial in nature and were already facing competition from the private sector. The enterprises were operating well below capacity utilization and contributed very little to gross domestic product (GDP). In addition, out of the national debt stock less than 25% was generated by public enterprises - worse still these debts were guaranteed by the government. This study adopted mainly a qualitative method of research. A qualitative research design was used to review literature on the impact of privatization of government enterprises on the revenue generated by the government of Kenya. Simple random sampling was used in order to select records of review. This is because the method minimizes bias in the sampling process to achieve reasonable precision given the constraints of the study.

Today, the workplace demands a lot. While the rewards may be higher, there is the stress too. An inability to relax or take a break can result in burnout. Not everyone experiences stress as severely as the clinic's patients, but many people are suffering from stress without even realizing it. However, occupational stress has become an important for harmful psychological and physiological effect on employees as stress is the major cause of employee turnover and absenteeism. Many employers around the globe may feel that a stress audit is a waste of time or money, but in fact the opposite is the case. Stress costs European employers up to 10% of Gross National Product (GNP) in terms of lost productivity and insurance claims. The study finds that almost half of the junior and senior level bank employees are experiencing moderate level of occupational stress. The study recommends that moderate level stress is helpful to increase employees' productivity and a culture of openness and understanding, rather than of criticism, is essential.

The study attempts to estimate the factors which influence the demand for health care as well as supply of health care in Bangladesh. A binary logistic regression has been employed with two urban samples in Bangladesh for analyzing the demand for health care. The empirical results of this research show that the estimated coefficient of price variable is negatively related to demand for health care in both the study areas. In both the study areas, there is no remarkable patient having health insurance because the concept of health insurance is not known to them. In demand analysis, findings of the study reached the conclusion the price of health care should be reduced in such a way that the patient gets maximum health care services. Government may set up some guidelines on consultancy fees of the private providers. On the other hand, ordinary least squares method has been employed to estimate the supply of health care in Bangladesh. The empirical results of the supply of health care show that price of physician visit and gross domestic product are positively related to supply of health care and it is statistically significant at 5 percent level.
