Nobel Prize-winner Jose Saramago´s brilliant new novel poses the question: What happens when the grim reaper decides there will be no more death? On the first day of the new year, no one dies. This of course causes consternation among politicians, religious leaders, morticians, and doctors. Among the general public, on the other hand, there is initially celebration - flags are hung out on balconies, people dance in the streets. They have achieved the great goal of humanity: eternal life. Then reality hits home - families are left to care for the permanently dying, life-insurance policies become meaningless, and funeral parlors are reduced to arranging burials for pet dogs, cats, hamsters, and parrots. Death sits in her chilly apartment, where she lives alone with scythe and filing cabinets, and contemplates her experiment: What if no one ever died again? What if she, death with a small d, became human and were to fall in love? 1. Language: English. Narrator: Paul Baymer. Southern Seahawk, the first novel in the Seahawk Trilogy, grows from the true story of Commander Rafael Semmes´ rise to infamy, becoming the Union´s Public Enemy Number One. In June, 1861, Semmes´ Confederate cruiser Sumter makes a daring escape through the Federal Blockade of the Mississippi. So begins the commander´s career as the Southern Seahawk. With a hand-picked crew of Southern officers and mercenary seamen, Semmes seizes eight enemy ships in four days, a record never surpassed by any other captain of a warship. By the time the cruises of the Sumter and her successor Alabama end, Semmes will have taken and burned more than 80 prizes, making him the most successful maritime predator in history. For two and a half years Semmes eludes a pack of pursuers and almost single-handedly drives marine insurance rates so high in the North, that many Yankee ships refuse to sail until he is caught. Back in Washington, Semmes´ predations fuel feuds within the Lincoln cabinet and incite the spy games of historical figures like courtesans Rose Greenhow, Betty Duval, detective Allan Pinkerton and the commander s mistress. 1. He was a community organizer in Chicago before earning his law degree. He worked as a civil rights attorney and taught constitutional law at University of Chicago Law School between 1992 and 2004. He served three terms representing the 13th District in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004, and ran unsuccessfully in the Democratic primary for the United States House of Representatives in 2000 against incumbent Bobby Rush. The complete fifth series of the legendary BBC Radio comedy series starring Tony Hancock. Created by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson in 1954, Hancock´s Half Hour was the radio vehicle that made Tony Hancock a household name. Each week listeners would be admitted to the sometimes fantastical, sometimes mundane life of ´the lad ´imself´. Aided and abetted by Sid James, Bill Kerr, Kenneth Williams and Hattie Jacques, Hancock would enter into the spirit of each episode with characteristic dolefulness. This volume contains all 20 episodes from the fifth radio series, collected together for the first time. In these hilarious Half Hours, Hancock has a makeover; turns his home into a private school; stands in the East Cheam by-election; presents three short plays from the East Cheam Repertory Company; takes in a wrestling match with Miss Pugh; and gets more than he bargains for when he wins a TV quiz show. The episodes are: ´The New Radio Series´; ´The Scandal Magazine´; ´The Male Suffragettes´; ´The Insurance Policy´; ´The Publicity Photograph´; ´The Unexploded Bomb´; ´Hancock´s School´; ´Around the World in 80 Days´; ´The Americans Hit Town´; ´The Election Candidate´; ´Hancock´s Car´; ´The East Cheam Drama Festival´; ´The Foreign Legion´; ´Sunday Afternoon at Home´; ´The Grappling Game´; ´The Junk Man´; ´Hancock´s War´; ´The Prize Money´; ´The Threatening Letters´; and ´The Sleepless Night´. This new set includes improved audio quality and extended edits for five episodes plus a previously unreleased mini episode recorded to coincide with the 1958 Commonwealth Games. Duration: 10 hours approx. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Sid James, Tony Hancock. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/rhuk/002333/bk_rhuk_002333_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.
John Cleese was born on October 27th, 1939 in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, England. He was the only child of Muriel and Reginald Francis Cleese. His parents earned a modest living. His father worked as an insurance salesman while Muriel was a stay-at-home mother, but they still sent their young son to private schools, intending to give him the best education and opportunities imaginable. John began his schooling at St. Peter´s, a preparatory school when he was eight years old. Early on, Mr. Cleese showed promise, receiving a prize for English. Additionally, John was an athlete, excelling in cricket and soccer for much of his young life. Unfortunately even during his early life, John had a complicated upbringing. His relationship with his mother was strained. Cleese is quoted as saying, ´´When I was a child and I was upset about something, my mother was not capable of containing that emotion, of letting me be upset but reassuring me, of just being with me in a calming way. She always got in a flap, so I not only had my own baby panics, fears, and terrors to deal with, but I had to cope with hers, too. Eventually I taught myself to remain calm when I was panicked, in order not to upset her. In a way, she had managed to put me in charge of her. At 18 months old, I was doing the parenting.´´ Cleese would later go on to say that his mother was ´´supremely self-centered´´ and that she ´´did not take interest in anything that did not immediately involve her.´´ Those issues would persist throughout much of Cleese´s life. 1.
